About

Christine Gates is an Australian photographic artist, printmaker and writer living in Sydney, Australia. She trained at the University of NSW College of Fine Arts, where she received a Master of Fine Arts in 2005. She completed a Master of Applied Linguistics at the University of New England in 2014. She has worked as an exhibiting artist, writer and educator for the last 30 years.

Currently Christine is working on a book based on images and text from her exhibition, The Path from the House of Wisdom. In 2016 Christine began an artist residency, followed by a virtual exhibition, at the Museo Galileo in Florence. Her project was supported by a number of important institutions and museums in Florence. It examines links between medieval Arabic science and scientific developments in the West.

This residency continued a research project, undertaken with the support of the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris, that examines connections between cultures through developments in science and exploration.

This project continues themes explored as artist-in-residence at the South Australian Museum and exhibited there and at the Museo del Pueblo de Guanajuato in Mexico.

In spare moments, Christine Gates wanders the globe, photographing people and places. She works with digital equipment, and collects old analogue cameras when she comes across them.
